Easy Homemade Oatmeal

Oatmeal is a great, nutritious way to kick the day off! If you're looking for a change from Instant Oatmeal or simply want to make your own, here's a super simple oatmeal recipe for your Instant Pot. It'll take a little more effort than the microwaveable instant versions, but will be well worth the extra effort.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1-2 tbsp of butter*
  • ½ tspn kosher salt
  • ½ tspn ground cinnamon
  • ⅛ tspn cardamom
  • ⅛ tspn nutmeg
  • ⅛ tspn ground ginger
  • 2 cup water
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup
  • ½ tspn vanilla extract
  • 1 apple, diced

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Press the Sauté button on the Instant Pot
  2. Add 1-2 tbsp of butter
  3. Add rolled oats and mix with the butter
  4. Toast the oats by sautéing on high for about 5 mins giving them a little color
  5. Add the water, salt, cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, ground ginger, maple syrup, vanilla extract, and ½ a diced apple
  6. Stir to blend all ingredients
  7. Pressure cook manual on high for 3 minutes, then quick release
  8. Open carefully, mix, then serve in a bowl
  9. Sprinkle some of the remaining fresh apple on top
  10. Enjoy!

TIPS

  • If you like your oatmeal a little on the watery side, increase water to 2¼ cups of water before pressure cooking
  • * For some folks, 1 tbsp of butter might be plenty. We prefer to add a little more butter to give the dry oats a better coat for toasting
  • If the oatmeal is too watery, do a water reduction by sautéing the finished oatmeal on high for a few minutes
  • When the oatmeal is ready to eat, try experimenting with sprinkling other fresh fruit. In the picture above, we added diced Bartlett Pears
  • The sweetness of the above was right on for us. If you have a sweeter tooth, try adding more maple syrup and/or a little brown sugar. This is all personal preference
